How Does the Nervous System Regulate When You’ve Always Been in Fight or Flight? And How Does That Connect to Adoption? Part 1

Hey y’all, I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. But before we get into it—how have you been?

How’s January treating you?

Are you taking care of yourself?

Okay, let’s get into it. If you’ve been following Adopted Black Girl for a while, you know I’ve been on a journey to regulate my nervous system. One of my biggest goals for 2025 is to have a relaxed nervous system and a sound mind. Basically, internal peace is the priority.

So, what does your nervous system actually do? It’s in charge of everything—your thoughts, your memory, how you move, your senses, and even things you don’t think about, like your heartbeat and breathing. At the core of it all are nerve cells (neurons) that carry messages between different parts of your body.

But when your nervous system is out of balance, it can show up in so many ways—mood swings, anxiety, stress, and feeling irritated all the time. It can even hit you physically with headaches, tension, sleep issues, or a weakened immune system. And let’s not forget how it messes with your focus and makes everything feel overwhelming. Sound familiar?

As adoptees, we carry a lot. Whether it’s navigating identity, relationships, or just the daily emotions that come with it all, our nervous systems have been through a lot. So, how’s yours holding up?

Let me share five things I’m doing right now to help regulate my nervous system—because let’s be real, the world isn’t slowing down for us.

  1. Routine is my best friend. I’ve said it before—I’m not a free spirit; I’m a structured spirit. Having a morning routine, night routine, and even a work routine helps keep me grounded.
  2. Finding small joys throughout the day. What’s your healthy dopamine hit? For me, it’s something as simple as music, journaling, or my favorite snack.
  3. Weekly check-ins with someone I trust. Having that one person I can be real with makes all the difference.
  4. Starting my day with deep breaths and a cold cup of water. It sounds simple, but it sets the tone for the day.
  5. And yes, movement. I know you’ve heard it before, but seriously—whether it’s stretching, a short walk, or a dance class, just move your body.

Before we can heal, before we can work through anything else, we need to reset- let’s make that a priority.

That’s all for now, but I’ll see you next week for a new blog. Remember—blogs drop every Sunday at 9:00 p.m. EST and YouTube videos go up every Monday at 9:00 a.m. EST

Thanks for being part of this community. Talk soon! 💛
